To enrich teenagers’ summer cultural life, promote scientific and technological knowledge, ignite children’s enthusiasm for scientific exploration, and support community-based science education for young people, on July 28, the volunteer service team of the Shanghai Institute of Instrumentation Co., Ltd. visited the “Love‑Filled Summer Daycare” program in Zhongshan Subdistrict, Songjiang District, delivering a lively, engaging, and highly informative science‑education session titled “The Mysteries of Sensors” to nearly 20 primary school students. The event allowed the children to get up close with smart technologies and immerse themselves in the unique allure of science.
This science‑education session focuses on sensor technology, which is ubiquitous in everyday life. Tailored to the cognitive level of primary school students, it eschews complex technical jargon and adopts a teaching approach that combines real‑world introductions, engaging explanations, and hands‑on experiential learning. At the outset, volunteer instructors drew on familiar daily scenarios, using clear and accessible language to launch the lesson. Starting with well‑known examples such as smartphone sensors, motion‑activated lights in hallways, automatic thermometers, and smart sensing features in household appliances, they explained, in a straightforward yet insightful manner, the core principles of sensors, their classifications, and their basic applications. This helped children understand that these tiny devices—often referred to as the “five senses of technology”—serve as the essential interface through which smart devices perceive the world, finding widespread use across domains like everyday life, industry, and cutting‑edge technologies, thereby dispelling any sense of unfamiliarity or detachment they may have felt toward science and technology.
To make science education more engaging and hands-on, this session featured a variety of interactive activities. Volunteers prepared a series of experiential games for the children to try. Through these interactions, the kids enthusiastically participated, collaborated with one another, and immersed themselves in the joy of scientific experimentation.
The entire science outreach event combined education, entertainment, and hands-on learning, effectively broadening children’s scientific horizons, fostering their observational skills, practical abilities, and scientific thinking, and enabling them to deeply appreciate the allure of scientific innovation—planting in their hearts the seeds of a love for science and a spirit of bold exploration.
This outreach initiative to provide science‑education volunteer services at community summer care programs represents a key step by the Shanghai Institute of Instrumentation Co., Ltd. in fulfilling its social responsibilities, deepening public‑oriented science communication, and supporting STEM education for young people. Moving forward, the company’s volunteer team will continue to leverage its technical expertise, actively engage in community‑based science‑communication efforts, and regularly organize a variety of science‑education volunteer activities. By harnessing its professional capabilities, the team aims to enhance students’ scientific literacy, convey the warmth of the enterprise, and demonstrate the commitment of a state‑owned enterprise.
